Chapter 2 continued...
XL held the phone in his hand. He turned it over. He didn't see any reset button, so probably that wasn't an option. But perhaps he could try pressing some of the buttons at the same time.
"What are you doing?" XL's dad asked. "You aren't trying to reset it, are you? With that kind of phone, even if you reset it you won't be able to use it without the password."
"Aw, shucks" said XL. He walked into the kitchen and dropped the phone into the metal wastebasket.
His father heard it clang as it hit the bottom of the basket. "Hold on, XL" he said loudly. "Come back here."
XL came back into the living room.
"That's an expensive phone" said his dad, "don't you think the owner will be sad to lose it?"
"I suppose so", said XL.
"If that was your phone, wouldn't you wish that someone would save it for you, so you could get it back?"
"Yes. But it's hopeless."
"Aren't you giving up rather easily?" said his Dad. "If that was your phone, you would try everything you could think of to get it back. So put some effort into it!"
XL felt a bit sheepish--like he was being inconsiderate or something! But he had things to do. He wanted to see a new movie on Netflix that he had just become available yesterday. Plus he had homework that he had to get done by the start of next week.
On the other hand, he thought of the Golden Rule, which said to treat others the way you wish they would treat you. There were lots of times when people went to some effort to do nice things for him, and he appreciated it. Maybe if he could find the owner of this phone, they would appreciate it too, and he would feel happy about it. The other stuff could wait.
